This game not only marked the final Blue Devil win of the conference season, but celebrated all seniors of the Blue Devil basketball team.
As one of the most accomplished seniors on the Blue Devils team, guard Jerrel Enerson-Matthews consistently added points to the scoreboard and led UW-Stout to numerous victories this season. No. 15 has played on the Blue Devil Basketball team for four seasons and has a bittersweet attitude as the end of his last college basketball season draws near.
Michael Fant, a special education major, has played for the Blue Devils for two seasons, originally playing on UW-Marathon County. The 6-foot-5-inch guard grew up in Weston, Wis. where he graduated from DC Everest high school.
Grant Franzen, a Blue Devil all the way from Waverly, Iowa, played great this season by way of points and assists. The forward is a business administration major here at UW-Stout.
Nathan Staidl entered his junior year on the Blue Devil team with immense potential and contributed a large number of points. This 5-foot-9-inch guard grew up in Lena, Wis. and will graduate with a degree in construction.
Playing their last game of the regular season, the seniors and the rest of the Blue Devils showed their mettle by winning an incredibly high scoring game against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds.
A 94-87 score proves that the UW-Stout men's basketball team has what it takes to make it through the upcoming tournament.
After an early battle, UW-Stout finally gained control of the lead by halftime by nine points. Honoree of the night, Enerson-Matthews, proved his ball-handling and scoring skills with an impressive game high of 26 total points.
The second half of the game was close between the two teams, but two free-throws completed by Eric Hostetter gave the Blue Devils enough breathing room to push through and top the Blugolds.
Enerson-Matthews has high hopes for the team in the upcoming WIAC tournament.
"A key to us winning the tournament will be defense and heart," said Enerson-Matthews.
